AWA regulations define standards for the care of laboratory animals. To ensure animal well-being, trained husbandry and veterinary professionals deliver daily care in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, AWA regulations as defined in the USDA CFR 9, and the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
Yale University has a centralized animal resources program, the Yale Animal Resources Center (YARC), which operates fifteen housing units throughout the institution and provides full service daily care for standardized per diem rates. Services provided through per diem rates include housing, feeding and watering, sanitation, veterinary care for most naturally occurring diseases, preventive medicine and quality assurance programs.
YARC supervisors, under the direction of the Attending Veterinarian, are responsible for managing the care of all vertebrate animals used in research, training and testing. Please visit the YARC web site for detailed information regarding the services that YARC provides.
The YARC and Veterinary Clinical Services have 7day/24-hour emergency coverage. A callback system is in place to respond to any emergency in a timely manner. After hours, husbandry emergencies may be directed to 785-2526 and veterinary emergencies to 785-2501
