Maximizing species-specific behavior and minimizing stress-induced behavior are cornerstones to husbandry.
Cages
Primary enclosures (caging) must:
- Be secure.
- Be free of injury.
- Provide for and allow normal postural adjustments and animal comfort.
- Allow access to food and water.
- Support a clean and dry area for the animals.
- Be easily sanitized.
Institutional policies for cage density, based on size and weight of the animal in comparison to cage dimensions, are strictly enforced to ensure positive social interaction and pre and post-natal care, where applicable, and animal well-being. Please visit the YARC and IACUC web site for detailed information regarding cage density policies.
