Yale’s Responsibilities

Each institution that falls under authority of the AWA or receives PHS support for research, teaching or testing must operate a program with clear lines of authority and responsibility. This includes a properly functioning IACUC, procedures for self monitoring, adequate veterinary care, a program of occupational health, sound animal husbandry practices, and appropriate maintenance of facilities for housing animals. Meeting this responsibility involves the Institutional Official, the Attending Veterinarian, facility managers and supervisors, the Principal Investigator and research staff.

Yale University has an institutional policy which outlines its commitment to an environment conducive to high-quality research, humane treatment of animals, and safety of personnel. Yale is committed to full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies at the federal, state, and local levels. These laws, regulations, and policies require Yale to provide appropriate facilities for animal housing and care, and to guarantee sufficient resources to support key personnel and facilities.
