An investigator’s federal research project will end the last day of the month and he has $12,000 remaining. The investigator has instructed his business office to transfer expenditures from his set-up account. Should the business office prepare such transfers?
Maybe. A cost transfer to a sponsored project can only be done if it benefits the project and is done in a timely manner.
- The PI must describe in writing the benefit to the project
- The cost transfer must be done within 90 days of the calendar month end of the original charge (or within 90 days following the occurrence for HHS agencies other than NIH)
- Indicate why costs were not charged correctly originally
