Environmental Enrichment
Environmental enrichment (toys, food treats, creative safe manipulanda, etc.) are provided to many species, especially for non-human primates. Exercise is offered to specific species (dogs). Yale has a policy for the Environmental Enhancement Program for Nonhuman Primates and a policy for the Exercise and Environmental Enrichment for Dogs. Please visit the YARC and IACUC web site for detailed information regarding these policies.
Advance approval from the IACUC is required for exceptions to the provisions for environmental enrichment and exercise as there are federal regulations that mandate these provisions.
Handling
Animals must always be handled in a manner that prevents discomfort, distress and injury to the animal and the animal handler. Handling and restraint methods vary by species. Training arrangements for species-specific handling and restraint can be arranged through Regulatory & Safety or Veterinary Clinical Services. Please visit the YARC and IACUC web site for detailed information regarding these services.
