There are a few principles for investigators to keep in mind with regard to in-person recruitment. If written materials are to be distributed at advocacy or focus groups, workshops, peer meetings, or wherever potential subjects might congregate, both the venue and the written materials must be submitted to the IRB for review and approval. The timing of the in-person approach, the location of the recruitment, and the qualifications of the recruiter should all be taken into account with regard to respect for the subject’s privacy and confidentiality. Additional information on privacy during recruitment is available in Module #4.
